Is a university degree required to obtain a CMA designation?

Yes. Graduation from a recognized university degree program is required to qualify for the CMA Entrance Examination. A program focusing on sound business education that covers technical accounting and management studies is recommended; courses taken to satisfy the degree will then work towards fulfilling prerequisite requirements.

What is a "recognized university degree"?

CMA Canada’s national standard requires an applicant’s degree to be completed from an institutional member of the Association of Universities and Colleges of Canada (AUCC) or from an educational institution who is not an institutional member of the AUCC but whose degree is deemed equivalent to a degree from an intuitional member of the AUCC.

Non-Canadian degrees must be deemed equivalent to a degree from an institutional member of the AUCC.

Tell me more about the Entrance Examination.

The objective of the CMA Entrance Examination is to evaluate whether candidates have mastered technical skills in management accounting, financial management and taxation from the prerequisite courses.

The Entrance Examination is held twice each year, in mid-June and mid-October.  The exam is four hours in duration and is comprised of approximately 120 multiple choice questions.

The pass mark for the exam is 60%.  Candidates must pass the Entrance Examination to proceed into the Strategic Leadership, MBA-CMA or CMA-CPFA program.

CMA offers a number of resources to assist candidates in preparing for the Entrance Examination.  Further information can be obtained from Carolyn Carter-Legacy.

Upon successful completion of the Entrance Examination, do I have to commence a CMA Professional Program immediately?

Successful entrance exam writers usually apply to become candidates and enroll in a CMA Professional Program as soon as they get their results. However, this is not a requirement - successful entrance exam writers may take up to two years to start either program.

Both professional studies and any practical experience components of the CMA Professional programs must be completed within five years of passing the exam. In the interim, individuals must remain a member in good standing. Successful entrance exam writers are encouraged to keep CMA Canada updated of address changes to ensure they receive timely information about program developments and enrolment applications each year.

Is there a practical experience requirement?

Yes. Candidates enrolled in the Strategic Leadership Program or MBA/CMA Program are required to obtain a minimum of 24 months of practical experience. As a prospective CMA, you must gain practical experience that challenges you to apply management principles and accounting knowledge in real world environments.

This experience requirement is split into two elements: operational and managerial. Operational experience is the application of accounting and reporting concepts and techniques, in the context of management accounting. Managerial experience is the application of professional and management skills and principles, in the context of decision-making.

CMA Candidates will be assigned a mentor, an experienced CMA, for the last 12 months of their practical experience component.

What is the Strategic Leadership Program?

The two-year, part-time, CMA Strategic Leadership Program is designed to shape CMAs as financial and strategic management professionals. The program focuses on the best of contemporary and emerging management accounting and practices, while building on a strong undergraduate business education, in which technical accounting and other management skills have been addressed. Continuous enhancement is fundamental to all CMA program content and delivery.

Through a process of frequent contact with employers, review of emerging practices in organizations around the world and academic literature, the Strategic Leadership Program has been developed. It is continually scrutinized to ensure it represents the best of contemporary and emerging practices. The Strategic Leadership Program runs concurrently with 24-months of full-time, practical work experience, providing immediate and tangible benefits to your career.

After completing the Strategic Leadership Program, you’ll understand how tools in the areas of strategy, management and management accounting, operations, human resources, marketing and information technology, jointly inform and guide strategic planning, and implementation through all phases of an organization’s product/service life-cycle.

What is the MBA/CMA Program?

The MBA/CMA Program is a joint program between CMA New Brunswick and UNB Saint John. Students complete both the CMA designation and the MBA degree requirements in 36 months of part-time study. The MBA/CMA Program is designed to combine the broad business skills of the MBA degree with the accounting expertise and professional skills of the CMA. A combination that will create a winning career path.

All of my education is from out of country. How do I become a CMA?

Exemptions for prerequisites may be given for studies undertaken internationally.  If your university education is from outside of Canada, please forward an official or notarized translation of your transcript, along with course descriptions (in English or French) for these credits.  Once we have accounted for all prerequisite courses and a Canadian degree equivalency, eligibility to enter into the CMA Program is granted.

Evaluations are on a case-by-case basis.
