If it’s Crowded up the Middle....Go Deep.

The name of the game is advancement. And success, in any kind of business venture, demands a multidisciplinary approach, creative thinking and professional managerial skills.

This graduate program contains three courses focusing on contemporary management accounting issues. Like all courses in the program, they are a semester in length and will bring theory together with application to the organizational environment in which the MBA-CMA candidates work. Topics in these three courses will reflect the best of contemporary issues, examined at the strategic, policy and implementation levels.

Recognizing the increasing business demands made upon CMAs, program designers have set out a series of electives to assist them in a globally competitive environment.

Flexible Design

The key to working full-time while undertaking a rigorous, graduate-level program is flexibility. The program design includes two points of study where you have the option of deferring up to two courses. Complete the program in a minimum of 28 months, with no deferrals, or take a bit longer...it’s up to you.

Understanding the pressures of conflicting commitments on our candidates, CMA Nova Scotia and Saint Mary’s staff take care of much of the registration process. For example, administrative issues such as text books, application and registration... even parking passes - are taken care of without you ever visiting the university.

Delivery

Candidates will undertake two courses each semester. Interactive day-long sessions will be augmented by web-based independent study. The interactive sessions will run in a Friday/Saturday format, with a total of 6 days of sessions (3 Friday/Saturdays) each university semester.

CMA candidates will be required to complete a total of 7 university credits to earn the MBA degree. (note: 7 credits = 14 courses) All aspects of the CMA Strategic Leadership Program syllabus will be reflected in the equivalent of 4 MBA credits. In the remaining 3 credits, CMA candidates will be encouraged to develop greater expertise in Finance, Accounting and International Business.

The Practical Experience Requirement

The practical experience requirement is monitored and verified to insure that candidates obtain appropriate experience to enable them to undertake the responsibilities entrusted to professional management accountants. The length of qualifying experience should be long enough to permit prospective CMAs to demonstrate they have applied the knowledge, skills and professionalism demanded of a professional management accountant.

To satisfy this requirement, you must gain a minimum of 24 months of appropriate, progressive management accounting experience through full-time employment concurrent with the MBA-CMA Program. A description of appropriate experience with examples is provided in the Practical Experience section.

You should be aware that without any prior work experience candidates normally do not meet our practical experience criteria in a period of less than 36 months. Since most applicants take the one year Accelerated Program and then complete their CMA, the 36 month estimate fits perfectly with your academic work. Even if you have not met the experience requirement when you have completed all your academic work, you simply ‘defer’ graduation until sufficient experience has been gained. Feel free to contact our office for further information on this requirement.

Saint Mary’s Quality Requirement

Saint Mary’s University will apply no additional admission criteria to the CMA Prerequisites. MBA-CMA candidates must maintain a quality point average of B (3.00) to continue in the program

Transfer Protocols

Currently, Nova Scotia is the only province offering the MBA-CMA Program as a regular route to our designation and therefore there is no comparable program in any other province.

Applications for admission to the Society of Management Accountants of Nova Scotia from candidates who are members of other CMA partner organizations will be granted upon demonstrating that the following standards have been fulfilled. Admission to the MBA-CMA program in Nova Scotia is competitive and possession of the minimum requirements does not guarantee admission.

In order to be eligible for admission, candidates must normally possess a university bachelor’s degree in commerce, business or management.  Applicants are expected to have a Grade Point Average of 3.00 or equivalent standing in their university degree programs.

Transferring candidates must:

• Have passed both Part 1 and Part 2 of the CMA Canada Entrance Examination (or have received exemption from Part 1 due to graduation from a CMA accredited university degree program and have passed Part 2).
• Be members in good standing in their home province; and
• Have no complaints of professional misconduct or incompetence pending against them in their home provinces.

No advanced standing towards the MBA-CMA will be granted for SLP modules completed in another province. Candidates will be assigned mentors in their home province at the appropriate juncture.
